Who's laughing now...

When electric cars were first introduced it was almost a joke. No one believed that it would ever be practical to buy a battery powered vehicle instead of a car that runs on gas. They also had very awkward designs, like the car wasn't supposed to look that way. With four dollar a gallon gas, people have opened up their minds a little more to the idea that fossil fuels may be on the way out. Drivers don't laugh at electric cars as much now as they wonder about them.

How reliable is it?
How safe is it?
How much more are repairs?
How much is it going to cost?
Is it going to make me look stupid?

A company called Tesla Motors answered all of these questions. Tesla has designed a consumer vehicle that is strictly electric powered. This car gets over 240 miles per charge and gets to 60 mph in under 4 seconds. It's a consumer car, which means it as to be affordable, with an asking price of just under 100,000 dollars. That's the price of a new Porsche so it's not outrageous, just expensive. The design is impressive... it looks just like a sports car. You would never guess that the car is powered by batteries. The Tesla roadster is fast... scary fast. It has a two speed transmission; forwards and backwards. This is a quote from the Tesla Motors website:
"How powerful is the acceleration? A quick story to illustrate. A favorite trick here at Tesla Motors is to invite a passenger along and ask him to turn on the radio. At the precise moment we ask, we accelerate. Our passenger simply can't sit forward enough to reach the dials. But who needs music when you're experiencing such a symphony of motion. "

While the above average dollar asking price is still pricey, the cost will come down. The technology is brand new, and the demand is high. Tesla Motors can charge a lot and still have a lot of customers because of the quality of their product. Skeptics should remember how much pc's used to cost, and look how that turned out... If your looking to buy a car and have a little extra change, this might be a smart investment. While I can't guarantee that driving an electric car will improve you street cred, it will definitely make you one of the fastest drivers on the street.
