It's A Duesy!

Duesenberg Automobile & Motors Company was founded in 1913 by two brothers named Fred and August Duesenberg. At first, the Duesenbergs set out to make sport cars that would race in many known races such as the Indianapolis 500 and the French Grand Prix. Their first “mass-produced” car was the Model A. Unfortunately only 667 were made due to the fact that they were highly sophisticated using complex engine systems such as dual overhead camshafts and four-valve cylinder heads and many people could not afford them or understand them at that fact. Another car named Model X, introduced soon after the Model A in 1927, was one of the rarest cars ever built by the Duesenbergs. This was due to the fact that the Duesenberg Company had just put the Model X in production when the company was sold to a well known transportation firm owner named E.L. Cord. He demanded that production be stopped immediately so that they could begin working on high-class luxury vehicles; only 13 Model X’s were ever made. Their first production vehicle together was the Model J. When it was first debuted at the New York Car Show of 1928, it produced 265 horsepower and was capable of reaching a top speed of 119 mph. That’s more powerful and faster than my car now! It also had a supercharged version called the Model SJ that had a top speed of about 130 -140 mph and 0-60 mph times around 8 seconds. The Model J along with other models usually ran from about $13,500 - $25,000 depending on what model, engine type, and features. With that the Duesenberg was off and running. They reached extreme popularity mainly with their high performance and high class engines and mainly among the rich and famous personnel. Many Duesenbergs were made between 1928 and 1937 but production ceased in 1937 after Cord's financial empire collapsed. Many later attempts, after World War II, made by August Duesenberg, to revive the company failed. To end this story on a good note though, Duesenbergs are one of the most popular classic cars in the world. At any given auction, on a normal bid, a Duesenberg will mostly like reach over $1 million, some even go for multimillion figures. Duesenbergs were the classiest cars of their time and the famous phrase “It’s a Duesy” doesn’t just mean something is easy or simple but also is a way of remembering one of the most simple but extraordinary vehicles of the 1920’s and 1930’s.
